Dog Cages and Dog Crates can be a place to securely keep your dog when you are BRIEFLY away from the house or otherwise unable to supervise him. Additionally, he may come to recognize his dog enclosure as a safe haven away from the hustle and bustle of noisy human social gatherings and even see it as his permanent sleeping place. One caution, however, is that you have to be careful not to use it as a place of punishment so that your pet doesn't become oppositional about going there.

Dog Cages and Dog Crates: Don't Abuse Their Use |
It is advisable to crate dogs only when you are at home. Adult dogs should not be in a dog enclosure any longer than 8 total hours a day (much of that would be nighttime while you sleep and preferably NOT 8 straight hours while you are at work). Puppies should go no longer than 2 hours at a time due to their small bladders (you should start out pottying them at least every hour, however). Also, NEVER put them in wire dog cages with a collar on, as it can be a strangle hazard. |
Confusion About Crate/Cage Terminology is Normal!
Is there a difference between a dog crate and a dog cage? ...Not really. They are really used for the same purposes and are virtually interchangeable terms. Some feel that a dog crate is basically a cage made up to feel "homey" and comfortable by making it into a cozy den.
The term "cage" gets a bit of a bad rap and is not used as often as the word "crate" because people tend to associate the word "cage" with "jail". But associating the words cage and jail is not really a fair assessment, as long as you aren't talking about a puppy mill or abusive-type of environment. As mentioned, dogs can often grow a security bond with their dog enclosures because many like to be secure and nestled in a "den-like" atmosphere (as long as they have plenty of exercise, love and freedom and the cage isn't ABUSED).
The difference between dog crates and dog cages also at times can be considered to be the material with which they were constructed or whether you're talking about indoor or outdoor dog enclosures. But today the terms are basically synonymous. Plastic dog crate carriers, which are often times referred to as kennels (again - confusing because big outdoor dog cages can also be known as dog kennels), are the type required and often seen being carried when people travel with their pets on airlines (Air Travel-type Dog Crates Carriers Are Shown (and can be purchased) by Clicking Here - see image below, also).

| Plastic dog crates like this one are a bit less airy than wired dog cages or crates. When you purchase plastic crates, they often are shipped as a "two piece" top and bottom unit that you easily put together. | |
