Puppy crate training is a highly successful and popular way to house train new dogs or puppies. The effectiveness of crate training puppies stems from tapping into the natural canine instincts of your dog.

It’s all based on a dog’s instinct to make a den. By instinct, dogs and puppies will try extremely hard not to go to the bathroom in a den where they sleep, eat and drink. So when you do puppy crate training, where the crate eventually becomes his den, you have a chance of training your dog more quickly.

Why?

Because a crate training puppy will do his best not to soil his den.

Key Factors to Dog and Puppy Crate Training

-          You need to get a dog crate cage just big enough for your pooch to stand up and turn around in and also fit some floor padding and his dog bowls. However, you don’t want to give him room enough to have an accident and then be able to get away from the soiled part of the cage. You need to check on your pup often though, because if there is an accident, you don’t want him to sit in it for long.

-          You need to establish a regimented schedule. Dogs and puppies thrive on routine. Puppies have smaller bladders and less control than adult dogs. This mandates that crate training puppies must be taken out more frequently than crate training adult dogs.

We Recommend the ultimate starter kit - the Puppy Crate Training PUPPY PACKAGE.

Puppies need to start puppy crate training by being taken out of the cage every 20 – 30  minutes, and taken outside to do his business every 45 minutes to an hour and after every meal. You can gradually extend this time if your dog is coming along well. Same with older dogs. Start your adult dog on an every hour schedule (extending as appropriate), and also take him out after every meal.

     Puppy Crate Training "Don'ts"

-          Don’t leave your puppy in a crate longer than 30 minutes to an hour at a time, or your adult dog longer than 8 hours in an entire day (preferably broken up into smaller chunks of time).

-          Don’t use the dog crate cage as a place of punishment, or yell at your dog for having an accident, because it won’t help and your dog may build up resentment towards his cage.

-          Don’t make a big fuss about leaving the house or saying lots of goodbye’s. You want leaving the house to be as routine and as non-chalant as possible so as to not alert your dog that he's going to be alone.

-    Don't have a collar on your dog when in a crate. It can be a strangle hazard.

Puppy Crate Training "Do's"

-          Do put the dog crate cage in an area where you can keep an eye on your dog and where he will take comfort in being in the same room as you (if possible) while puppy crate training.

-          Do feed him meals, give him water and give him toys in his cage (be careful of choking hazards) while dog and puppy crate training. You want him to feel as much at home as possible. Also try to have him go into the cage on his own as much as possible. Leave the crate door open sometimes to get him comfortable, especially at the beginning. Close it when he’s eating and feeling at ease.

-          Do Have Patience - Dog and puppy crate training takes time, and accidents and setbacks do happen. Sometimes you may feel quite frustrated. It often takes just a couple of weeks to crate train a dog, but it CAN take a couple of months to complete the puppy crate training process. Ultimately, though, your patience will pay off as your pet will become the fun, house trained companion you’ve been so excited about!
